Costa Rica, which joined UNESCO on May 19, 1950, houses the UNESCO Cluster Office for Central America, which is in charge of the Organization’s activities and projects in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

According to the Education for All Development Index, Costa Rica is situated in an intermediary position in the ranking, meaning that it will be able to achieve its Education for All (EFA) objectives in 2015 as long as the country enhances its efforts to improve the quality of its educational services.

As of September 2006, Costa Rica has 185 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
