The country hosts the UNESCO Office in Havana, which is the Cluster Office to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Aruba.

Several of the initiatives Cuba is involved in relate to coast-specific issues and management.

There is for instance a Sustainable Development in Coastal Regions and Small Islands (CSI) project that focuses on the socio-economic and environmental evaluation and management of the south coast of the Havana Province. The aim is to apply the principles of integrated coastal management to provide for the presence and development of the human population sustainably in a fragile coastal area. 

The 6 Biosphere Reserves in Cuba are active sites for research, environmental education and the promotion of sustainable development, including ecotourism.
