Dominica

Dominica joined UNESCO on January 9, 1979. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Kingston, Jamaica.

Dominica works actively with UNESCO, especially on education. UNESCO has helped the Ministry of Education design a national Education for All Plan, and has organized training and work groups. As a result, Dominica was able to host the second meeting on higher education in the Caribbean in 2004.

Dominica has also participated in UNESCO projects on communication such as “Multimedia, Radio and the Internet for Social Inclusion of Caribbean Indigenous Communities”.

The Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a luxuriant tropical forest centered on a 1,342-metre high volcano, is inscribed on the World Heritage List.

Dominica participates in the Youth Visioning for Island Living initiative.

UNESCO’s Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura paid an official visit to Dominica in February 2005.
