Uruguay joined UNESCO in November 1947. The country hosts the UNESCO Office Montevideo, a Cluster Office that also covers Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay.

In January 1949, the UNESCO Scientific Cooperation Centre for Latin America was inaugurated in Montevideo, one of the first offices to be established by the Organization outside its Paris headquarters.

The country holds three UNESCO Chairs and is home to one UNEVOC centre. As of September 2006, Uruguay has 90 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).

Uruguay is one of the eight countries which have volunteered to participate in the “One UN” pilot initiative. This will test how the UN family – with its many and diverse agencies - can deliver in a more coordinated way at country level.
