Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina had banner headlines throughout the 1990s when a considerable part of its heritage fell victim to the war.

Mostar Bridge, the symbolic reconstruction of which brought the communities of both sides of the river together in a common cause, is now inscribed on the World Heritage List, as is the surrounding district.

The Ars Aevi programme to set up a world museum of contemporary art in Sarajevo was an important focus of cooperation with UNESCO and the sponsors and has now reached completion.

In the field of intangible heritage, a survey of the country’s traditional arts and crafts is being carried out with a view to their protection and promotion.

Intercultural dialogue is of the highest importance in areas of high tension : a project linked to the creativity of youth is designed to make the public aware of the plural nature of the country’s identity.
