Germany is represented on the World Heritage List by thirty-one cultural sites and one natural site. The Cathedral of Cologne, which was inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2004, was removed from that list in 2006 thanks to a number of urban planning decisions implemented by the local authorities.

As a State Party to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, Germany is committed to that instrument's implementation. In April 2007, a conference entitled Cultural Diversity – Europe’s Wealth. Bringing the UNESCO Convention to Life”, "was organized in Essen.

The field of cultural industries is yet another area of cooperation between Germany and UNESCO. In 2005, the city of Berlin, which joined the Creative Cities Network in the field of design, actively participates in the Network by organizing conferences on related subjects.
