Lebanon and UNESCO sign two cultural agreements


“Capacity Building of Human Resources for Digital Documentation of World Heritage Sites affected by the war” and “Cultural reconciliation for Lebanese youth”. 

signing of cultural agreements between Lebanon and UNESCO.jpg Lebanon and UNESCO signed today August 2nd 2007 two cultural agreements. The first project which is capacity building of Human Resources for Digital Documentation of World Heritage Sites aims to build capacities of Human Resources in charge, or potentially linked with, the conservation, the development and the enhancement of tangible cultural heritage in Lebanon. The main target group will be the DGA staff at the Ministry of Culture and also Lebanese University (UL) students, while the main subject of the action is to establish accurate high definition 3D digital data through most advanced techniques of digital documentation and risk mapping exercise for World Heritage Sites affected by the recent 2006 war through pilot on-site operations for Baalbek and/or Tyre .

Source of Funds : UN-Lebanon Recovery Fund
Budget : US$ 767,226 .
Time Frame: 14 months
Executing agency : UNESCO-Beirut Office
Partners : Ministry of Culture/ DGA

The second project “Cultural reconciliation for Lebanese youth” aims at mobilizing Lebanese youth towards the creation of networks of solidarity based on a shared understanding of their cultural identity. It is expected that more than 300 young students will engage in discussions on different topics, namely, shared heritage, history, religion, as well as human rights and citizenship.

Time Frame : 24 months

Partners : Ministry of Culture , Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO

The agreements were signed by H.E. Mr. Tarek Mitri Lebanese Minister of Culture on behalf of Lebanon and by Mr. Abdel Moneim Osman Director UNESCO Beirut.
