From 08-09-2009 to 09-09-2009 (Global Event)

International Literacy Day 2009: The Power of Literacy

International Literacy Day will again be held on September 8th as an occasion to mobilize worldwide support for literacy. This year International Literacy Day will focus on the empowering role of literacy and its importance for participation, citizenship and development, with the slogan “The Power of Literacy”.

UNESCO Apia Office encourages Pacific Ministries of Education, civil society organizations and faith based organisations to emphasize the critical role of literacy in empowering people on Tuesday September 8th.

UNESCO is actively involved in promoting literacy and is the lead of the United Nations Literacy Decade (UNLD) from 2003 to 2012. The decade aims to increase literacy levels and to empower all people everywhere. In 2005, UNESCO launched the Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE) as a framework for achieving the Decade’s goals.
