Workshop on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Samoa (Apia, 16-18 June 2010)

Workshop on the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) safeguarding in Samoa was held at Samoa College Hall, bringing together some fourty experts.

The Workshop was opened by Ms G. Nu’ufou Petaia, Chief Executive Office of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture. She has expressed a strong interest of Samoa in the ICH safeguarding and the UNESCO 2003 Convention, which has been well reflected in the draft Ten-Year Cultural Policy of Samoa (2011-2020).

After the UNESCO presentations on the overview of UNESCO activities in the Pacific in relation to ICH and the introduction to the 2003 Convention and its Operational Directives, national experts made presentations on different aspects of ICH, ranging from language, tattooing, traditional boat building, handicrafts, traditional medicine, performing arts, environmental conservation practices, IP protection, to ICH education at school. Experts then participated in a group exercise in drawing up a strategy and action plan for ICH safeguarding in Samoa.
