Just published: Evaluation of the Festival of Pacific Arts

The Festival of Pacific Arts (FOPA) is the premier arts and culture event in the Pacific region held every four years since 1972. The recent evaluation conducted by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community(SPC) with UNESCO support highlights its socio-economic and cultural impacts on the sustainable development of the region.

The report of the evaluation of the Festival of Pacific Arts is now available as SPC publication. This evaluation was carried out with the support provided under UNESCO/Norwegian Funds-in-Trust in 2009 with a view to assessing the Festival's impact in particular on the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage and the promotion of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage to which four Pacific states are parties.

The evaluation summarizes the Festival's effectiveness in showcasing the wealth of cultural diversity in the region, creating meeting opportunities among artists, cultural experts, and audiences within and outside the region, and fostering a sense of regional identity. The publication also contains a number of recommendations for the organisation of the future Festivals and the regional cultural cooperation. The next Festival is planned for 2012 in the Solomon Islands.
