In the face of increasing levels of poverty, violence and inequity, and the alarming depletion of natural resources, the United Nations proclaimed the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, 2005-2014 (DESD). As leading agency, UNESCO promotes, drives and guides global, regional and national initiatives to advance quality education for all, the essential foundation for sustainable development. The DESD, fosters the changes in behaviour that will be required to preserve the integrity of the environment and a viable economy, and guarantee that present and future generations will have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of social justice.

To this end, and so education may contribute to the construction of a sustainable future, its purposes, contents and practices must be the object of a profound analysis. OREALC/UNESCO Santiago strives to sensitise, mobilise and commit the Latin America and Caribbean countries to the fulfilment of the DESD’s objective.

OREALC/UNESCO Santiago also supports the creation and consolidation of regional, subregional and national capacities, as a means of ensuring that sustainable development will be made a part of educational policies and their curricular proposals. These actions, however, call for the participation of each and every social actor.
