Active participation in modern society demands a progressively higher level of scientific training. Improving learning in this field will optimise both the students’ quality of life and their involvement as citizens.
Latin America and the Caribbean are said to have an elitist scientific education, a characteristic that widens the exclusion and inequity gap even further. The challenge consists of redirecting scientific education making it possible for all citizens to understand the world they live in, empower individuals to make sensible every day decisions, participate responsibly in democratic life, and commit themselves to the construction of a sustainable future.
OREALC/UNESCO Santiago is actively promoting the development of quality scientific education for all, from an early age. In order to help carry out this task, the Regional Bureau for Education created the Latin American Scientific Education Network, a regional strategy to facilitate participation, exchange, reflection and analysis, and communications among all national, subregional and regional actors engaged in the teaching of sciences.
