Sexuality Education for HIV prevention in Arica-Parinacota region (Chile)

Marķa Victoria Valenzuela is the Focal Point on Sexual Education and HIV/AIDS Prevention of the UNESCO Bureau in Santiago. Here, she shares with us information regarding the HIV/AISD prevalence in the Arica and Parinacota region in the north of Chile. This region is the most affected by HIV/AIDS in the country, with a rate that doubles the national average. Teenagers of 10 to 19 years old are the most affected.

All the United Nations agencies in the country are working to give a multisectorial answer to this problem, and UNESCO has contributed to the prevention by strengthening education in this issue by working with government officials and organizing workshops with the civil society. Also, UNESCO brings resources to help the region finance a regional sexual education program, oriented to prevent HIV.
