On 22 October 2007, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, together with Mr Geert Bourgeois, Flemish Minister for Administrative Affairs, Foreign Policy, Media and Tourism, signed the renewal of the UNESCO/Flanders Trust Fund agreement for the support of UNESCO’s activities.

Mr Philippe Kridelka, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Kingdom of Belgium to UNESCO was also present at the signature ceremony, accompanied by other officials.

The Director-General thanked Minister Bourgeois for the important and stimulating support Flanders has continuously given to UNESCO’s activities. Mr Matsuura particularly noted the two major UNESCO/Flanders Funds-in-Trust established to support UNESCO’s activities in general (1) and UNESCO’s activities in the field of Science (2), which have reinforced an important number of UNESCO’s projects in the fields of Culture, Education, and Science.

“The renewal of the UNESCO/Flanders Trust Fund to support UNESCO’s activities that we signed today confirms the trust and interest of Flanders on UNESCO’s programmes and projects. Under this agreement preference will be given to cooperation in the following sectors: Culture, notably cultural diversity and cultural heritage; Education, through EFA and implementation of the Dakar framework; and Communication and Media, which I am very glad to notice are also important priorities for the Flemish Government,” declared the Director-General.

Mr Matsuura went on to recall that in 2006 the Government of Flanders was among the 10 most important bilateral donors of UNESCO in terms of Funds-in-Trust extrabudgetary contributions. “I am therefore very glad that Flanders, through the renewal of this Trust fund and the funds provided by the second Trust Fund in support of Science activities, is able to maintain an important level of extrabudgetary contribution for the Organization,” he added.
