UNESCO Supports ‘Worlds of Culture’ Exhibition at the Borobudur Museum from 6 November 2013 – 6 January 2014

The opening ceremony of the ‘Worlds of Culture’ Exhibition was held on 6 November 2013 at the Borobudur Museum, Central Java, Indonesia. The exhibition is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office with technical and financial assistance from UNESCO Office Jakarta, and kindly supported by the Borobudur Conservation Office (BCO) of the Ministry of Education and Culture and PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko.

The exhibition focuses on ten (ten) projects in Southeast Asia that have been funded by the German Federal Foreign Office with a special focus on the conservation of the Borobudur Temple undertaken by Indonesian and German experts with coordination by UNESCO as well as the preservation and digitization of ancient manuscripts of the Yogyakarta Kraton The ‘Worlds of Culture’ exhibition will continue until the 6th of January 2014 and is open for public.

The exhibition opening was attended by around 70 guests including the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Thorsten Hutter; the Head of Borobudur Conservation Office, Mr. Marsis Sutopo; President Director of PT Taman Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko, Mr. Purnomo Siswoprasetjo; the Head of Culture Unit, UNESCO Office Jakarta, Mr. Masanori Nagaoka; the Head of Magelang Regency Tourism Office, Mr. Dian Setia Dharma and the Head of Borobudur Sub-district, Mr. Nanda Cahyadi Pribadi.

The ceremony was opened with a speech from Dr. Thorsten Hutter, in which he introduced the Cultural Preservation Programmes of the German Federal Foreign Office in South East Asia, including the Borobudur Temple in Indonesia. At the end of his speech he conveyed that the German government is very pleased to support efforts to conserve the Borobudur Temple for the next year. The speech was followed by remarks from Mr. Purnomo Siswoprasetjo who thanked the German Government for their continued support in the preservation of the Borobudur Temple.

Mr. Masanori Nagaoka also delivered remarks on behalf of UNESCO expressing his appreciation for the German experts for their efforts during the missions since 2011, the German Government for their generous financial support, and the Borobudur Conservation Office for their dedication in the preservation of the Temple. Mr. Magaoka outlined that the current work being completed by the BCO and international experts with UNESCO’s coordination aims to help ensure the long-term conservation of the Borobudur Temple Compounds World Heritage site.

The exhibition was officially opened by Mr. Marsis Sutopo together with Prof. Dr. Hans Leisen from the Cologne University of Applied Science, Cologne Institute of Conservation Sciences Germany, after they both delivered an insight into the joint project they have been doing together for conserving the Borobudur Temple.
