Brunei Darussalam became the 191st Member State of UNESCO on 17 March 2005. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Brunei has achieved gender parity at primary school level and is likely to achieve the adult literacy goal by 2015. Educational development is a major priority for Brunei, including youth entrepreneurship and vocational education.

Other areas in which Brunei is pursuing cooperation with UNESCO include crafting science, technology and innovation policy; capacity-building to help diversify the economy; communication networking, promotion of multilingualism in cyberspace, research on internet impact on youth values and access to new communication and information technologies; and cultural heritage preservation, inter-religious and cross-cultural dialogue and peace programmes.

Environmental protection is another ongoing priority, with forest areas providing potential resources for both bio-prospecting and eco-tourism.
