This conference will examine the relationship between legal and regulatory frameworks and institutional structures that contribute to good water governance.
Using a case study approach, participants will discuss a number of existing and proposed examples of water management institutions at the watershed, state/provincial, national, and international levels of government and seek to define common characteristics that lead to the definition of a corpus of "best practices".Case studies will be drawn from the Canada, Europe, Latin America, the United States, and other regions with contributions from UNESCO's Hydrology, Environment, Life, and Policy Programme (UNESCO/HELP) , the Global Environmental Facility International Waters Projects, and the GWP regional governance symposia. The sponsors of the Conference are the American Water Resources Association (AWRA), and the International Water Law Research Institute of the University of Dundee (IWRLRI). The meeting is cosponsored by Global Environment Facility (GEF), International Waters LEARN (IW:LEARN), and Inter-American Water Resources Network (IWRN), International Joint Commission (IJC), United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization/ Hydrology, Environment, Life, and Policy programme (UNESCO/HELP).
