Nearly every year since 1989, UNESCO organises a one-month French-speaking summer school on Solar Electricity for Rural and Remote Areas.
More than 500 participants from aproximately 50 countries have benefited from this activity. The European Commission under the auspices of the "Haut Conseil de la Francophonie" supports the Summer School which aims at:

building up a network of qualified personnel in National Renewable Energy Centres to ensure the planning, management and implementation of renewable energy programmes and projects;

encouraging the exchange of scientific knowledge and technical know-how;

updating knowledge and train engineers, scientists, economists, technicians and project managers;

creating teams of qualified trainers.The summer school wants to develope cooperation between the participants, speakers, industralists and others involved.

Two summer schools were organised in English-speaking Africa in 2001 and 2002.

There will be a SUMMER SCHOOL on Solar electricity organised at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France in July 2004.
