UNESCO and the Copenhagen United Nations Climate Change Conference

Copenhagen, Denmark, 7-19 December 2009

UNESCO and the Copenhagen United Nations Climate Change Conference

Following two weeks of negotiations, the Copenhagen United Nations Climate Change Conference reached an agreement to take note of the “Copenhagen Accord”, aiming at:

  • limiting temperature rise (to below 2 degrees Celsius)
  • reducing emissions (developed countries committed to list their emission reduction targets and developing countries their mitigation actions for 2020)
  • mobilizing finance for developing countries to fight climate change (US$ 30 billion for immediate action until 2012 and US$ 100 billion annually by 2020)
  • enhancing the absorption of greenhouse gases by forests.

UNESCO will continue to support the UNFCCC process and associated negotiations towards a global legally binding climate change treaty in 2010.
