The country hosts a UNESCO Cluster Office in Libreville, which covers Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe.

Gabon is involved in the Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP), the 1^st concerted approach ever developed to face a major extinction crisis. Through the project, scientific research is carried out to generate information necessary for the survival of great apes and their habitat, and genuine partnerships are established between all stakeholders of the fragile ecosystems where the apes live to allow for integrated management of these areas.
