Poland


The European regional Centre for Ecohydrology, based in Lodz, is operating under the auspices of UNESCO to promote integrated multidisciplinary ecohydrological research at the catchment level for the sustainable management, protection and restoration of aquatic resources. The efforts of the International Hydrology Programme (IHP) and the Man and the Biosphere programme (MAB) are combined to tackle this crosscutting theme.

         

There are also 9 biosphere reserves in Poland, which provide context-specific opportunities to combine scientific knowledge and governance modalities to reduce biodiversity loss and enhance social, economic and cultural conditions for environmental sustainability. Three of these are Transbounday Biosphere Reserves (TBR): the Krkonose/Karkonosze TBR is shared with the Czech Republic, the Tatra TBR, shared with Slovakia, and the East Carpatians TBR, shared with Slovakia and Ukraine. Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine created the Foundation for the Eastern Carpathians Biodiversity Conservation (ECBC) to support transboundary cooperation in managing their shared TBR.

Poland has been expanding its interest in the earth sciences over the past decades, and is presently involved in 7 projects relating to themes ranging from the study of the role of Holocene environmental catastrophes in human history to Devonian land-sea interaction.
