Technology Related Training for Marginalized Girls
Integrated approaches using formal and non-formal education as catalysts for poverty reduction among young girls in Cambodia, Indonesia, and Nepal


The overall goal of the project is to contribute to reducing poverty among girls and women in developing countries, notably in South and Southeast Asia. To achieve this goal, the project aims at promoting technical and vocational education and training for girls and young women in three selected countries in the region (Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal).The primary target group, poor, out-of-school girls and young women come from poor socio-economic background and are particularly vulnerable to abuse and exploitation, and often forced by economic circumstances into early marriage.
 
A concept of TVET for Girls may include various issues and aspects. In this project, it can be understood as a job-oriented technical training with basic scientific knowledge for poor out-of-school teenage girls at secondary education level. Of particular interest to this project is the critical examination of TVET programme that integrates gender and empowerment perspectives as key in enabling poor and out-of-school unemployed young women to acquire sustainable basic life and technical skills in order to improve their economic as well as social status and conditions. Pilot training activities have been conducted in seven communities in the three countries

This project aims to illustrate a number of issues and approaches related to skills training for poor out-of-school adolescent girls. It would explore the gendered nature of technical and vocational education, of the labour market, and of the social structures that define their opportunities and limitations. Looking at skills for young women involves an understanding of how the needs of this group differs from those of older women and the school girls, and how they can begin to use new skills to improve their economic positions and enable access to other rights.
