Eradicating Poverty by Strengthening Human Security
Strengthening the most deprived communities in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger
This regional pilot project was launched in 2002 with the aim of strengthening human security in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. The three national projects at each site are designed to operationalize the concept of poverty as a violation of human rights. In this context, ther three national activites were validated through a participatory process with local and national partners. Through this process, rural communities participated in the definition of specific human rights issues to be addressed and ensure that essential needs of a population are met in order to eliminate poverty and strengthen human security. These rights include:
· The right to participate
· The right to a decent life through access to basic services
· The right to have access to information, to the progress of science through the knowledge society
· The right to social peace and its consolidation
At a local level, project plans are developed in partnership with communities through a participatory process. Each of the villages and communities of the countries involved to date have formed steering committees to monitor the implementation activities and maintain the active engagement of the community.
A book published by UNESCO Publishing / Karthala: “Poverty – is it fate? – Promoting autonomy and human security among underprivileged groups – Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger” (2002) preceded the implementation of the projects. At the end of the projects, a comparative evaluation study (identification of the best practices) will also be published.
