The country is covered by the UNESCO Cluster Office in Bamako, Mali.

A UNESCO Chair on Gender, Science and Development in Africa is based at the University of Ouagadougou. This chair aims to promote an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation activities so as to give girls and women access to the scientific and technological culture and enable them to participate in the sustainable development of the African continent.

The first Transboundary Biosphere Reserve in Africa, the 'W' Biosphere Reserve, is jointly managed by Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. It constitutes a good example of a functioning Transboundary Biosphere Reserve.
