The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Mauritius maintains close ties with the Sustainable Development in Coastal Regions and Small Islands programme (CSI). It is nearly entirely surrounded by coral reefs, whose quality has been decreasing steadily due in part to the country’s large tourist industry.

In 2005, Mauritius hosted a key United Nations meeting for the Sustainable Development of Small Islands Developing States (SIDS). The main outputs of the meeting was a strategy document known as the Mauritius Strategy, which builds on the SIDS Plan of Action. The country is deeply involved in its implementation.
