The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Doha, Qatar.

UNESCO is assisting the country in developping a science and technology policy entitled A new vision for Bahrain.

Bahrain and the UNESCO programme for Environment and development in coastal regions and small islands (CSI) agreed on a Development Plan for a Coastal/Marine Environmental Database for Bahrain in 2001. The aim is to produce a digital marine atlas that will serve as the basis for a science-based environmental management system. This activity was extended to Coastal Resources Assessments and Oil Spill Sensitivity Mapping of the Gulf in collaboration with other Gulf countries.
