The country is covered by the UNESCO Office Beirut, Lebanon.
The country has relatively few major wetlands, but they are all important for globally threatened bird species. Of greatest value is the Euphrates valley, where a number of endangered species migrate, and may breed.
There is a UNESCO Chair in environmental protection at Al-Bath University, and the country is involved in a project aiming to enhance sustainable management of marginal drylands.
