The country is covered by the UNESCO Cluster Office in Apia, Samoa.

The Utwe Biosphere Reserve, in the state of Kosrae, is characterised by a high biodiversity, with tropical rain forests, mangrove forest, sea grass beds and coral reefs. In recent years, the country has known increased levels of pollution, and its ecosystems, including a massive marine environment, have felt the effects of climate change and overfishing. In Kosrae, some marine species such as turtles, lobsters, corals, and giant clams are endangered, but the establishment of the biosphere reserve is contributing to their protection.
