Due to the country’s central European location and its proximity to the Alps and the various terrains that are present there, Austria abounds in geological intricacies and is involved in many earth sciences research projects.

The ecosystems that the country harbours are many and varied. Austria currently has six biosphere reserves listed with UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme, and is involved in a project that aims to analyse mountain ecosystems – particularly important in this mountainous country.

Below you can access the projects that are currently being implemented in the country within the framework of UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector.
