Bulgaria’s involvement in UNESCO freshwater programmes focuses on transboundary issues and integrated management: the Mesta-Nestos basin, shared with Greece, serves as a demonstration basin for the Hydrology for the Environment, Life and Policy (HELP) programme.

The country also participates in the Internationally Shared Aquifers Resources Management Programme (ISARM) in the Balkans, which aims to compile a world inventory of transboundary aquifers and develop wise practices and guidance tools concerning shared groundwater resources management through a network of experts and specialists.

Bulgaria is involved in a large range of earth sciences projects, from the metallogeny of central Asia to the more closely related study of the Black Sea Corridor. Below you can access the projects that are currently being implemented in the country within the framework of UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector.
