The country is covered by the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Tajikistan was the initiator of the International Year of Freshwater proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2003 and is cooperating actively with UNESCO in the fields of freshwater and earth sciences.
