Capacity-building in the Basic Sciences
UNESCO's Basic sciences programme deals with molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry, pure and applied physics and mathematics, as well as interdisciplinary areas that underlie human health, the preservation of the environment and human well-being. Capacity in specific disciplines is strengthened in all regions and at all levels through science education and the fostering of a science culture. Moreover, in promoting university science education, cooperation with the Education Sector is strengthened. Most of the activities in the Basic sciences fall under the auspices of the UNESCO International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP).
