The International Research and Training Centre on Urban Drainage (IRTCUD) was established under the auspices of UNESCO in Belgrade to foster advanced research development in urban water management and provide support to decision makers for sound governance. The centre hosts the International Network of Centres for Urban Water (CUW).

Serbia is also participating in several earth sciences research projects and has a biosphere reserve.
