Research Grants to Young Scientists on Great Apes of Africa

    The Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, to allocate US $100,000 to encourage scientific research and work related to great apes by young scientists under the framework of the MAB Young Scientists Research Award Scheme. This financial support is targeted to the 15 least developed of the 21 African countries that are range States of great apes: Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Uganda and United Republic of Tanzania.

    More awards and projects for youth

    • National MAB Awards and Certificates: several countries have established national MAB-related award and certificate initiatives for young people. One example is the MAB Certificate for Young Researchers and Environmental Managers of Indonesia.
    • Some countries also encourage MAB Young Scientists Networks. The Canadian Biosphere Reserves Association's Student Network (CBRASN) is a good example.
    • UNESCO MAB also sponsors educational training packages for youth, in line with the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
