Biosphere Reserves: learning sites for sustainable development

Biosphere Reserves (BRs) under the UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme are important contributors to the design and implementation of activities and initiatives during the UNDESD (2005-2014). Educational and training activities have been initiated in many biosphere reserves with scientific, cultural and recreational focuses. Activities in biosphere reserves include on-site science programs for schools pupils and intertwining programs between schools associated with different biosphere reserves.

Following the Madrid Action Plan (2008) adopted by the Third World Congress of Biosphere Reserves biosphere reserves are being further promoted as learning sites for sustainable development.
