To promote awareness and the mobilization of various stakeholders for the conservation of biodiversity during 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, the Senegalese Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Reservoirs and Artificial Lakes through its Directorate of National Parks and the Directorate of the Department of Environment and Classified Establishments organized a joint programme to celebrate:
- The International Biodiversity Day with the theme: "Biodiversity for development and poverty alleviation"
- The World Environment Day with the theme: "Millions of species, one planet, a common future".
UNESCO, through the Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme, and funded by the Autonomous Organization of National Parks of Spain (OAPN), participated in providing 500 t-shirts and 500 caps with the theme of the International Year of Biodiversity and the theme of International Biodiversity Day. The caps and t-shirts were distributed during the celebration that took place in the Saloum Delta Biosphere Reserve from 3 until 5 June 2010, in Senegal. This event had a great media impact and significant political representation.
