An oceanographic cruise was implemented on the occasion of the Anniversary from 15-25 August 2009 on board R/V “Mehr” in the area of the Hormoz Straight in the Persian Gulf. 5 National organizations took part in the cruise. Measurements were made of oceanographic parameters, marine meteorology, marine geology, sedimentology, pollution and others. Report of the cruise is available from the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography (INIO). The second research cruise is planned for 2010.
The Persian Gulf (Boushehr) Research Station which is the third research station of Iranian National Institute for Oceanography (INIO), was opened on the occasion of World Ocean Day on 8th June 2010 in Boushehr, Iran. The Institute is a successor of the Iranian National Center for Oceanography (INCO) which was established in 1992 according to the agreement between the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and UNESCO.
INIO has 5 research Departments including Marine Living Resources, Marine Non-Living Resources, Marine Engineering and Technology, Oceanographic Data and Information, Marine Policy & Management (Legal, Economic, Security & Strategic Studies).
INIO also plans to develop its research stations in the north and south coasts of the country.
