Regional Experts Meeting for the Elaboration of a Ten-Point Plan of Action for the UNESCO Coalition of Latin American and Caribbean Cities against Racism.

Within the framework of UNESCO’s initiative to create an International Coalition of Cities against Racism, the regional Latin American and Caribbean Coalition will be launched in October 2006 in Montevideo, Uruguay, on the occasion of the Summit of Ibero-American Heads of State and Government.

Montevideo has been designated and has undertaken a firm commitment to play the role of “lead city”. From 21 to 23 June 2006, together with other events in the city related to the fight against racism, xenophobia and intolerance, the city of Montevideo will be hosting the meeting of experts entrusted with drawing up a Ten-Point Plan of Action reflecting the specificities and priorities of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Some of the main priorities are the fight against racism (the persisting discrimination against indigenous, black and other groups), xenophobia, ethnic and religious intolerance, the problems caused by massive migration to the cities of the region, the increasing inequalities between the richest and the poorest and discriminatory attitudes towards people with HIV/AIDS.

For more information on the event (in Spanish), please see the Web site of UNESCO field office in Montevideo, Uruguay.
