High-Level Meeting on Teaching Philosophy in Africa
During the month of September 2009, two regional meetings on teaching philosophy will be held in Africa.
 
The first will be held in Bamako (Mali) on 1-2 September 2009 for Francophone countries. It will be organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Mali together with the Ministry of Basic Education, Literacy and National Languages and the Malian Commission for UNESCO, in collaboration with UNESCO and its office in Bamako.

The discussions will be opened by Pierre Sané Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Social Sciences, in the presence of Siby Ginette Bellegarde, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Salikou Sanogo, Minister of Basic Education, Literacy and National Languages of Mali.

Three other Ministers of the region will also be present: Taboye Ahmat, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Training of Chad, Julien Razafimanazato, Minister of National Education of Madagascar and Kaba Rougui Barry, Minister of Pre-University, Technical, Professional and Civic Education of Guinea Conakry.

The 2nd meeting, for English-speaking countries, will be held in Port Louis (Mauritius), on 7-8 September 2009, organized by the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) in collaboration with the Mauritius Ministry of Education, Culture and Human Resources, UNESCO and its regional office in Dar-el-Salaam.

Discussions will be opened by Vasant K. Bunwaree, Minister of Education, Culture and Human Resources of Mauritius. Gaudentia Mugosa Kabaka, Acting Minister of Education for Vocational Training in Tanzania will also be present.

The aim of these two meetings is to identify the main challenges in the field of philosophy teaching in Africa, such as training of teachers in secondary schools, the job opportunities available for graduates in philosophy, the teaching of philosophy and interdisciplinarity, language teaching, and the issue of the world-wide reputation of African philosophies.

These meetings follow the three regional meetings already held in May 2009 in the Philippines for the Asia-Pacific region, in Tunisia for the Arab States and in the Dominican Republic in June 2009 for Latin America and the Caribbean.
