Poverty eradication

Combating poverty has been selected as the MOST Regional Priority for Latin America.

During its first ten years the MOST programme worked on a poverty eradication strategy in close co-operation with other UNESCO sectors emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary and cross-sector action in this field. This strategy included: policy development activities to establish best practices in the fields of poverty eradication, social exclusion and indigenous knowledge; project work; publications; and the organization of international conferences, workshops, symposiums, etc. The reports, studies and publications resulting from the work of MOST on Poverty Eradication during this period are available in the MOST Digital Library. UNESCO's strategy to combat poverty has evolved over the past years, favouring a cross-sector, human-rights based approach. Within this context, the MOST Programme, with its focus on the interface between research and policy, continues actively to promote synergies with the overall UNESCO anti-poverty strategy, to build national capacities for research and policy analysis, to develop country strategies and action plans for the elimination of poverty and finally, to monitor their implementation. In line with this approach, the MOST Programme is particularly supporting the UNISOL (Universities in Solidarity for the Health of the Disadvantaged) project which addresses the rights to health and social services in an effort to fight poverty by promoting social health. UNISOL is a pilot project within UNESCO's anti-poverty strategy.
