Senegal - “Manfred Ulmer” Paediatric Hospital
UNESCO supports a local paediatric hospital, “Manfred Ulmer”, which provides emergency care, special treatment and hospitalization for children as well as an external patients’ ward with consulting services for mothers.

About 100 km south of the Senegalese capital, Dakar, in the small village of Joal-Fadiouth, UNESCO continues to support a local paediatric hospital, “Manfred Ulmer”. Set up in the seventies by a German benefactor, this hospital is vital for the health of children not only in the nearby community, but also in the rural communities of Nguégniène and Ngazobil, and even for young patients transported from places as far as 70 or 100 km away. The hospital provides emergency care, special treatment and hospitalization for children as well as an external patients’ ward with consulting services for mothers.

Every year more then 20,000 treatments are administered by a professional and highly dedicated staff of doctors, male and female nurses, and support personnel. Not only was the hospital equipped with new furniture and technical material thanks to UNESCO, but local personnel were also trained in management skills to work more closely with the local community.
