India – Education for Tibetan Refugee Children Various projects aim to promote the cultural and linguistic identity of Tibetan refugee children through tailor-made education materials and facilities. |
Tibetan refugee children live right across India, but many are concentrated in the Himalayan hills of Himachal Pradesh. By being immersed in the Indian education system they risk losing their cultural and linguistic identity. UNESCO has financed and provided the expertise for the production of Tibetan textbooks and the setting up of Tibetan pre-schools which respect the children’s mother tongue and guarantees that the children socialise in it. Funds collected in Germany also made it possible for a boarding school to be constructed in the mountains of northern India. It has science labs and a whole library of Tibetan books, the aim being to bring modern life to young Tibetans without them losing their unique heritage.
