International Bioethics Committee (IBC) - Work programme for 2008-2009

In the light of the work programme provisionally approved by the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) at its fourteenth (ordinary) session (Nairobi, Kenya, 17-19 May 2007), and after having taken into account the conclusions of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC) (Paris, July 2007) and the wishes of the Director-General of UNESCO, the Bureau of the Committee has finalized the work programme of IBC for 2008-2009 as follows.

IBC will continue to contribute to the promotion and dissemination of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (2005), by pursuing its reflection on the principles set forth therein.

The Committee will therefore continue its work on social responsibility and health in order to complete and finalize its report on this subject and will also focus on the principle of respect for human vulnerability and personal integrity, as set forth in Article 8 of the Declaration.

Moreover, IBC will examine the Report of the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies entitled Is Human Reproductive Cloning Inevitable: Future Options for UN Governance with the aim to explore whether there is any scientific, social and political change that would justify a new initiative at international level, and submit its analysis to the Director-General.
