The International Coalition of Cities against Racism Moves towards a New Era
 
The International Coalition of Cities against Racism (ICCAR) will hold two international conferences this month: the first one, in Nuremberg (Germany), from 5 to 6 October, and the second one, in Bandung (Indonesia), from 29 to 31 October.
At the invitation of UNESCO and the city of Nuremberg, representatives from the lead cities of all regional coalitions will gather together with representatives from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). Global issues such as exclusion and inequalities resulting from socio-economic disparities; discrimination against urban indigenous communities; combating stereotypes and promoting dialogue among cultures; participation of women in local decision-making processes; and creation of strong local partnerships will be discussed for their importance to the all regional networks.

The Nuremberg conference will seek to transform the International Coalition of Cities against Racism into an effective mechanism in the combat against racism and discrimination by adopting a programme of action, which will enhance cooperation between the six regional Coalitions in Africa; Asia and the Pacific; Europe; Latin America; North America and the Arab Region.

To the east of Nuremberg, another international conference will be held in Bandung (Indonesia) at the invitation of UNESCO to all members of the six regional coalitions. The International Conference “Cities Coping with the Global Crisis” is jointly organized by the Governor of West Java Province (Indonesia), the United Cities and Local Government – Asia Pacific Regional Section, and UNESCO.

The main objective of the Conference is to provide a forum for local decision-makers from around the world to share experiences and successful practices in order for them to further develop and strengthen their policies. Therefore, the themes that the participants will be discussing are:
  • the crisis and the ‘Right to the City’;
  • cities as melting pots: building bridges between indigenous and new communities;
  • towards an inclusive society: opportunities to overcome the crisis; and
  • municipalities facing the crisis: challenges, policy and practices.
The aftermath of both conferences is expected to make a turning point and pave the way for a new era of international cooperation to overcome the long lasting challenges.
