17-11-2008 (UNESCO) - During a round table on health and sport, UNESCO attended a three day workshop on “Health and a Healthy Way of Life in Industrial Regions” during the 2nd European Green Festival in Mariupol, Ukraine, from 6 to 9 June 2008. The event was supported by the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) and the International Association of Traditional Wrestling Sports (IATWS).

07-11-2008 (UNESCOPRESS) - The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, and the Director-General of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), David Howman, will host a press conference on Wednesday 12 November at the Organization’s Headquarters in Paris to celebrate the 100th ratification of the International Convention against Doping in Sport (Room IX, 4 p.m.).

25-09-2008 (UNESCO) - The International Congress on Sport for Peace and Development was organized by UNESCO and the Jamaican Government in Kingston, Jamaica, from 13 to 16 September 2008. One of its main purposes was to encourage Member States of the Caribbean Community to integrate physical education and sport into their policies, and to enhance their collaboration in this field.

17-09-2008 (UNESCO) - A round table on “Sport for Development and Peace” was held in Zanzibar (Tanzania), from 8 to 10 September 2008. It brought together governmental authorities and representatives of sports movements, including the National Olympic Committee, to reflect together on the theme “Sport for Development and Peace”, and its role within a multi-sectoral approach.

12-09-2008 (UNESCOPRESS) - To coincide with the opening of an International Congress on Sport for Development and Peace Whilst in Kingston (Jamaica) on 13 September, the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, has decided to designate the Jamaican sprinters Usain Bolt and Veronica Campbell-Brown UNESCO Champions for Sport.

11-09-2008 (UNESCO) - On 2 September 2008, Mr Davaajargal Munkhb, the Mongolian sumo wrestler known professionally as Hakuho, was designated UNESCO Champion for Sport by the Organisation’s Director-General, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, in recognition of his dedication to UNESCO’s values and ideals.

11-07-2008 (UNESCOPRESS) - UNESCO and European Athletics – organization of European national athletic federations – announced today they have decided to prolong their successful collaboration. The agreement they signed in 2006 to provide a framework for joint projects in education and youth sport will now run through the 2010 European Athletics Championships.

28-06-2008 (UNESCO) - 19 years ago, the Stade Français created the Youth tennis tournament Cup, named the BNP Paribas Cup since 2004. Along the years, this event became the "French Open for youngsters of 14 years old and less…". This year's tournament will take place from 7 to 13 July in Paris, France.

08-04-2008 (UNESCO) - At the end of March 2008, the Republic of Bashkortostan held a three day presentation at UNESCO Headquarters, showcasing Bashkiri culture. During this celebration UNESCO officials met with Bashkortostan’s Minister of Sport and Culture and a commitment was signed between UNESCO and the Bashkiri authorities to start a museum dedicated to traditional games and sports.
