World Forum on Human Rights
World Forum on Human Rights   Welcome to the UNESCO site of the World Forum on Human Rights organized by the City of Nantes (France). The main purpose of the Forum is to bring together on an equal footing all categories of actors working for the implementation of human rights in order to have an extensive exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences.
 

The World Forum on Human Rights is dedicated to the memory of Mr Sergio Vieira de Mello, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, killed in Baghdad on 19 August 2003.

The World Forum on Human Rights is an extraordinary and innovative event for several reasons.
  • It is a global forum open to all categories of actors;
  • It is a platform for exchange of knowledge, good practices, general reflection, intensive debate in order to contribute to the advancement of human rights in the world. The Forum is not geared towards standard-setting activities, monitoring the implementation of existing human rights instruments or political debate;
  • It is held in the City of Nantes, member of the network of Cities for Human Rights. This City where the famous Edit de Nantes ended the religious wars in 1598, is now well known as a City of Tolerance.

First Edition, 16-19 May 2004

The First Forum was held from 16 to 19 May 2004 at the initiative and with support of UNESCO, and in cooperation with the French National Commission for UNESCO. It was organized under the high patronage of Mr Jacques Chirac, President of the French Republic. The First Forum was also dedicated to the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle Against Slavery and its Abolition. It brought together on an equal footing more than 1,000 participants of 70 nationalities, representatives of all categories of actors involved in the promotion and protection of human rights around the world. Second Edition, 10-13 July 2006

The second edition of the World Forum on Human Rights will take place in Nantes (France) from to 10 to 13 July 2006. The Second Forum is devoted to the fortieth anniversary of the adoption in 1966 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Third Edition, 30 June -3 July 2008

The Third World Forum on Human Rights will take place at the International Convention Center of Nantes Métropole from 30 June to 3 July 2008. It will be dedicated to the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. More ...

27-06-2008 (UNESCOPRESS) - UNESCO launched an international coalition of cities against racism and discrimination at the 3rd World Forum on Human Rights in Nantes (France) which takes place from 30 June to 3 July. The agreement on the coalition was signed on 30 June, during the Forum’s opening ceremony, by Pierre Sané, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, and representatives of the 6 regional coalitions of cities against racism and discrimination.  More...
