World Philosophy Day in Italy
Italy is this year’s host of the international celebration of World Philosophy Day. It will take place in Palermo on 20 and 21 November 2008. The host country thus continues with its long-term support for philosophy at UNESCO.
Palermo, a city old and marked with history similar to the passion to philosophize, has this year the place of honour in this celebration of philosophical reflection.

Philosophers, students, journalists, academics, diplomats and numerous other philosophy enthusiasts will gather in Palermo around the theme “Power and Rights”. The subject has been selected to contribute to international debates on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Day’s activities will be inaugurated by the Director-General of UNESCO and by Italian and international authorities. The opening ceremony will take place in the renowned historical headquarters of the Società Siciliana per la Storia Patria.

Ten round tables on various and pertinent topics will focus on
  • The State, citizens and power
  • Identities facing each other: cultural diversity and philosophical dialogue. (2 round tables)
  • Human dignity, civil community and public authority.
  • Alternative law, multiple identities and civic liberties.
  • Philosophy, chaos and law.
  • Philosophy and the European project: from one crisis to another?
  • From the Mediterranean to the Pacific: new spaces of power and cradles of civilization.
  • The inter-subjective dynamics of power: recognition, prestige and authority, and
  • Science and power.
They will take place in the inspiring setting offered by the Palazzo Butera.

The celebration of World Philosophy Day in Palermo is co-organized by UNESCO, the Italian National Commission for UNESCO and the Permanent Delegation of Italy to UNESCO, with the support of the Fondazione Banco di Sicilia.
