Days of the Centenary of the Birth of Françoise Dolto: “Françoise Dolto, Latest Thinking, 1908-2008”
Prev Events 4 of 4
In 2008, a century after the birth of Françoise Dolto, the famous French pediatrician and psychoanalyst, it is more than ever essential to pass on her work. In this light, UNESCO and the Association des Archives Françoise Dolto will organise the symposium “Françoise Dolto, the relevance of a thought, 1908-2008” at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, from 12 to 14 December 2008, in the framework of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Days of the Centenary of the Birth of Françoise Dolto: “Françoise Dolto, Latest Thinking, 1908-2008”Françoise Dolto’s reasoning and that behind philosophy for children naturally converge. Philosophy offers children the necessary conditions to foster free speech, critical thought and the possibility of being listened to, and from there the possibility to gain the self-confidence necessary to their development. The philosophical presupposition that a child is a full-fledged being of speech and thought thus finds in François Dolto’s psychoanalytical approach its illustration and a great source of enrichment, which UNESCO hopes to encourage.

As part of its aim to foster philosophical reflection, UNESCO promotes the development of philosophical teaching at all levels of education. In 2007, it published the study Philosophy, a School of Freedom, UNESCO Publishing. It particularly highlighted the importance of accompanying children through their process of thought and questioning by teaching them to philosophize. Philosophy for children has thus developed in several decades a wide range of practices that have stood the test. It has now created a true foundation to encourage children to reflexive thought.

In this context and on the occasion of the World Philosophy Day 2008, UNESCO will host the Days of the Centenary of the Birth of Françoise Dolto: “Françoise Dolto, Latest Thinking, 1908-2008” at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, from 12 to 14 December 2008.

Organized with the Association des Archives Françoise Dolto, it will take place in Room I.

The entrance will be at: 125 avenue de Suffren, 75007, Paris.
