| UNESCO participates in the 5th World Urban Forum The fifth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF) will be held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from 22 to 26 March under the theme “The Right to the City - Bridging the Urban Divide.” The world’s leading conference on cities, which is organized by the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT) every two years, examines the most pressing problems related to the urban context. |

UNESCO has been cooperating with UN-Habitat since 1996 and more closely since the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2005 to contribute to the building of urbanization with a human face. In this perspective, this global forum is an opportunity to present its activities and to share experiences with other stakeholders. Besides having its own stand in the general WUF 5 exhibition, UNESCO will actively contribute to official events by organizing networking and training events.
The round table on the theme “How to Build Inclusive Cities: UNESCO / UN-HABITAT / UCLG Joint Efforts” will provide an opportunity to present various projects that address the social and ethical challenges posed by the global process of urbanization. Among the initiatives to be highlighted in this context are the UNESCO Chairs “Urban policies and citizenship” (Lyon) and “Social and spatial inclusion of migrants” (Venice), the World Agenda Charter on Human Rights in the City jointly coordinated by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and the Nantes Secretariat for Human Rights and Local Governments, UNESCO’s International Coalition of Cities against Racism and Discrimination, and the joint projects of UN-HABITAT and UNESCO “Historic Districts for all: a social and human approach for a sustainable revitalization” and “Creating Better Cities for Migrants”. This event will be held on 23 March (from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.).
The training workshop “How to Prepare Education for a Changing Urban Environment?” will focus on the integration of sustainable urban development in the education of urban dwellers as a means to address issues such as poverty, discrimination and exclusion, sanitation, water and governance in the urban context in a sustainable manner. Experiences from UNESCO’s initiatives relating to the right to the city or sustainable urban water management will be shared. The event will be held on 24 March (morning).
