New publication on the UN Treaty Monitoring Bodies and migrant workers

December 18, a NGO with Special Consultative Status in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, has released this October its latest publication The UN Treaty Monitoring Bodies and Migrant Workers: a Samizdat.

The paper discloses relevant information about the actual state of migrant rights within the UN system. It argues, for instance, that over half of the conclusions and recommendations of the six UN Treaty Monitoring Bodies between 1994 and 2007 addressed the rights of migrants. Yet, despite such intense activity, there remain significant gaps and shortcomings, linked to the particular vulnerable situation of migrants, which call for a better treatment and strategy. More importantly, the findings confirm that in addition to using these six international treaties, the universal ratification and effective implementation of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families – the Migrant Workers Convention – should remain high on the agenda of all those who are supporting the rights of migrants. The authors argue that mainstreaming migrants’ rights throughout the UN system continues to be an important challenge but needs to be achieved so that all governments can be held accountable under their international obligations.
